Il tempo è un fattore essenziale per Steinway & Sons. I legni vengono fatti essiccare e maturare in media per due anni fino a consentirne l’ottimale lavorazione. E ci vuole un altro anno prima che un pianoforte a coda Steinway possa lasciare la produzione. Tutti i pianoforti verticali e a coda STEINWAY & SONS sono capolavori artigianali e costituiscono di per sé delle vere e proprie opere d’arte. Time is valued highly at Steinway & Sons: the wood used must first be left to dry and mature over an average of two years until it can be optimally worked, followed by almost another year until the Steinway is allowed to leave the workshop. STEINWAY YESTERYEAR
Success needs courage – and passion. Both of these qualities were demonstrated by HENRY E. STEINWAY, the company founder. Born in 1797 in Wolfshagen, situated in the Harz Mountains of North Germany, Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg built his first stringed instruments at the tender age of 20. In 1825, just eight years later, he established his own workshop in Seesen. However, as it was only permitted to repair instruments there, he secretly produced his first grand piano in the kitchen of his house in 1836.
Known as the “kitchen piano,” this piano incorporated many pioneering developments for building grand pianos – such as the construction of a soundboard bridge made from a single piece of wood. The completion of this grand piano was without doubt one of the most significant moments of Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg’s life. After all, it was the first time he acted upon his vision of building the best piano possible, laying the foundation for his later renown.

Per il successo ci vogliono coraggio e passione. Il fondatore HENRY E. STEINWAY ha dimostrato di possedere entrambe queste qualità. Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg nasce nel 1797 a Wolfshagen nella regione dello Harz e già all’età di 20 anni costruisce i suoi primi strumenti a corde. Solo otto anni più tardi, nel 1825, apre a Seesen la sua prima officina. Tuttavia, dato che gli è consentita soltanto la riparazione di strumenti, nel 1836 realizza segretamente nella cucina della sua abitazione il suo primo pianoforte a coda.
Molte delle innovazioni pionieristiche della costruzione dei pianoforti, come per esempio il ponte della cassa armonica in un solo pezzo, si ritrovano già in questo strumento diventato celebre come il “pianoforte da cucina”. La realizzazione di questo pianoforte a coda rappresenta certamente uno dei momenti più importanti della vita di Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg. Perché in questa costruzione trasforma per la prima volta in realtà la sua idea del miglior pianoforte possibile ponendo i presupposti per la successiva fama mondiale.
